WAITING FOR THE ICE SAINTS

It’s still too cold for this time of year. Due to the cold spring and the late arrival of Persicaria tinctoria seeds, the plants are still to small to transplant outdoors. But we still have time. It is more than two weeks until the ice saints, with which we associate the date of the last frost. The period from May 11 to May 15 is believed to bring a brief spell of colder weather, including the last nightly frosts of the spring. In Austria, the Ice Saints are Mamertus, Pankratius, Servatius, Bonifatius, followed by the cold Sophia on the feast day of St. Sophia, which falls on May 15.
